On a stormy nineteenth-century night, Mary Shelley (Elsa Lanchester) recounts the further adventures of Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and his monstrous creation. Resurrected from the ashes of the windmill where he supposedly perished, the Monster (Boris Karloff) shambles his way across the countryside, searching for love and companionship and finding only hatred and fear. In a shadowy crypt, the Monster encounters Frankenstein’s Mephistophelian mentor Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who blackmails his former pupil into collaborating on a fiendish new project: making the Monster a mate. Widely considered to be superior to the 1931 original, Bride of Frankenstein contains some of the most celebrated moments in horror cinema: the Monster’s cigar-smoking hangout with a kindly old blind man; Pretorius’ collection of jar-dwelling homunculi; and, of course, the climactic appearance of Elsa Lanchester’s Bride, whose Nefertiti-inspired updo made her an icon of twentieth-century pop culture.
